The du command is used to determine the sizes of directory trees including sizes of all their contents and individual files. This command is quite useful for tracking down the files or directories that are eating up a lot of hdd or other storage media space. A directory tree is basically a hierarchy of directories with a single directory as parent directory and all other directories under it as sub directories.
